Twirly Decoration (F1)

knitted twirly

This very easy knit looks beautiful as it moves. Altering the colours and beads will make your decoration unique.

A printable version of this pattern is available.

You will need:

  • yarn leftovers (double knit)
  • knitting needles (6mm, 4mm and 2.75mm)
  • black sewing thread
  • large bead or beading wire
  • tapestry needle
  • scissors

Pattern:

  1. Cast on 100 stitches using 6mm knitting needles.
  2. Knit 5 rows.
  3. Switch to 4mm knitting needles, knit 6 rows.
  4. Switch to 2.75mm knitting needles, knit 3 rows.
  5. Cast off tightly.

Making Up:

Sew in the loose ends.

Add a loop of black cotton to one end of the cast off stitches. This is for hanging the decoration. Make the loop at least 15cm tall so that the twirly can twirl freely.

The cast off stitches need to be pulled taught to form the backbone of the decoration. This can be done either by hanging a weight from the bottom end or by working a length of beading wire through the cast off stitches.

There is a pattern for knitted beads available. The pattern can be stuffed with dried grains or beans for added weight.

Hang the decoration so that it can move freely and arrange the fabric so that it hangs in a spiral. The twirly will now twist in the breeze.

Notes:

Needle/Yarn Size

As with most ODDknit patterns the yarn and needle sizes in the "you will need" section are just a guide. Feel free to improvise with whatever needles and yarn you have lying around - that's half the fun!
