Fair Isle Variations:

Some fair isle variations.

This knitting pattern can be used to make decorated bow ties by working a fair isle panel as part of the design.

Step 1: Design your fair isle pattern on the blank grid below. The bottom of the grid will be at the centre of the bow tie so you may wish to leave a few lines blank to account for the centre wrapping.

Blank Grid.

This is my design.

Zig Zag Grid.

And so is this.

Star Grid.

Step 2: Insert this panel into the 'loops' knitting pattern as follows:

  1. Row 1: p9 in base colour, p colours accordng to bottom row of grid, worked from left to right, p9 in base colour.
  2. Row 2: k8 in base colour, sl1 k-wise, k colours according to second row of grid, worked from right to left, sl1 k-wise, k8 in base colour.

Continue until all the rows have been worked.

Step 3: Work Row 21 in base colour and make up exactly as for the plain bow tie.

Making Up:

Tack the open edges of the 'loops' together. Don't bother to do it neatly, all this will be hidden.
